Edison Cavani has said that Serie A outfit Napoli can defeat Real Madrid when both sides meet in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie next week.

Many have written off Napoli but Cavani opines that they can shock the European champions.

“Can they compete with Madrid? Why not? I can imagine how San Paolo will be for the return leg. Mamma mia, I’m getting chills,” he said.

Napoli have been consistent on their goal of beating Juventus to the Serie A title this term. They chase the defending champions alongside Roma but Juve have also been careful not to slip as they chase a record six Serie A title.

Cavani said that he still follows his old club but declined to be straight forward with their chances this term.

“I never miss a game when I can avoid it. I really like the football they’re playing, there’re a string team which plays in a gung-ho manner. Can they win the Scudetto? I don’t know, there’s still a long way to go. That said, I can’t speak about the strength of the other teams as I only watch Napoli,” Cavani said.

The player has been sterling for French side Paris St Germain this season, especially with Zlatan Ibrahimovic out of the way. The Swede joined Manchester United after last season ended, paving a clear path for Cavani.

The player has scored at least 26 goals in all competitions already, with his brace helping PSG defeat Nantes 2-0 to move within a point of log leaders Nice. The Uruguay international has contributed a lot to the Unai Emery-led side this season. He is the standout striker in the French Ligue 1 and says he would prefer to remain at PSG, adding that Napoli “don’t need me” based on their good form.
